Please join us for our wedding celebration on May 20, 2017
Tyler and I lived in the same dorm freshman year, Griffis Hall. We had several mutual friends, but never had the opportunity to be around each other. One night in February, a group of our friends went to North Farm to set up our hammocks and look at the stars. It was pretty cold that night, and when Tyler got up to leave, he offered me his blanket. He had such a good heart and went out of his way to be nice to me. I did not know he had thought I was cute for a little while at that point. A while later, Tyler asked me to go on a date with him. I was not sure at first, but I am so glad I gave him a chance! We have gone on a ton of adventures, been through some very stressful times together, and eaten way too much Zaxby’s and Chick-fil-a (seriously, an addiction). Tyler is my biggest supporter and best friend. I can’t wait to marry him in May!
Melanie and I first started hanging out during our time at Griffis Hall, our freshman dorm, in early 2014. One of our first encounters took place on a late night in which a group of our friends was going Enoing, or hammocking, for those who don’t know, at North Farm, a beautiful and isolated location close to campus. I got out of my hammock to go for a walk, and Melanie jokingly asked for my blanket. I played along with the joke and let her borrow the blanket. I even tucked her in. We continued to see each other here and there for a couple of months. I had developed a big crush on her, so I decided I was going to ask her out on a date. We sat down together, and I asked, “Can I ask you a question?” I saw a look of confusion and panic on her face. I then asked her the big question. “Do you want to go on a date with me?” I will never forget her response. “Can I get back to you on that?” When I told my friends her response, everyone tried to cheer me up, but I told everyone that I had a good feeling about it. I was confident it would work out, and it did. She said yes, and we have had adventures together ever since. I am so excited to continue in our lives together!
In March, Tyler and I both went to Destin for Spring Break. Though we knew we would be spending some time separately, we decided to go out to dinner one night to celebrate both my birthday and our two year anniversary. That day started out with my best friend suggesting that she and I go get our nails done. We did some shopping, and then I got ready for our date. Tyler drove us to the restaurant and unfortunately it was raining so we could not sit on the deck like he wanted. Tyler had been acting strange all day. He seemed to be nervous about something. I knew he had bought my engagement ring, but he told me that it would not come in until April, so the proposal was not on my radar. Eventually, the manager came up to us. He said that we were dressed really nice and that he would like to take a few pictures of us for their Facebook page. We agreed and walked outside to the covered part of the deck. I was so surprised when the manager handed Tyler the adventure book I made him for our six month anniversary. Tyler showed me a page that said “go to a fancy restaurant” and said he wanted to start filling it out more. We took a few pictures, and then I turned to go back inside. Tyler stopped me and told me that we could fill out one more. He turned the page and showed me where he had written, “Will you marry me?”. He got down on one knee, and, of course, I said yes! Later that night, we met up with all our friends and went bowling. It was a great night!
On Spring Break of 2016, I was going on a trip to Destin with some of my friends. Melanie was also on a trip there with her friends at the time. While in Destin, we planned to meet up together for a nice dinner. We decided to go to a romantic restaurant on the beach. It was a great night, but not everything went according to plan. I wanted to meet our friends on the beach after dinner, but it was raining and showing no signs of stopping. The plan changed to propose at the restaurant. I excused myself from the table and went to talk to the manager. He was happy to help and showed me a secluded spot on the back porch where I could pop the question. I went out to the car and grabbed everything I needed: the ring and our adventure book. The adventure book was a gift from Mel for our six month anniversary. It detailed a list of things we wanted to do together and left spots where we could put pictures of us doing those things. I sneakily wrote “Will you marry me?” on the page after where we left off. I was going to show her that we had listed “eat at a fancy restaurant” on one page and then flip the page and surprise her. I asked the manager to come and tell us that we are ready to get our picture taken. He would then take us to the back porch and stay to take pictures of the whole thing. Melanie could tell that I was nervous. We proceeded to the back porch when the manager came to our table. Her eyes widened when she saw the adventure book. I proposed, and everything went as I had hoped. She said yes, of course, and we even have dozens of pictures from the restaurant manager to prove it. I remember the feeling of joy and relief after the proposal. Even though not everything went according to plan, I am very happy with our story. This story sums up our crazy relationship. I would have never thought we would have taken the path to get to where we are, but I am glad we did. I love our unpredictability, and I love her! I can’t wait for her to be my bride!
